Cognitive and Emotional Disturbances by Acute and Chronic Variables in Cerebral Damaged Patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the cognitive dysfunction and emotional disturbances in patients with cerebral damage according to their acute and chronic course variables using the Korean Wechsler Intellignce Scale and Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory The sample consisted of 144 male patients referred for neuropsychological examination : 70 were left hemisphere damaged group (acute : 28, chronic : 42)and 74 were right hemisphere damaged group (acute : 30,
chronic :
44)
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. Within the 6 month acute variable period, left hemisphere damaged group had significant verbal dysfunction and thought disturbance tendency in subtests of KWIS such as Comprehension, Similarities and Vocabulary. This group also had
significantly
higher scores in L and Mf scales of MMPI than the right hemisphere damaged group. On the other hand, the right hemisphere damaged group had mainly performance dysfunction and emotional disturbance tendency but verbal score was satisfactory.
2. After 6 month chronic variable variable period the left hemisphere damaged group had significant verbal dysfunction and in some part exhibited performance dysfunction in subtests of KWIS such as Comprehension, Digit Span, VIQ and Digit
Symbol.
This
group also had thought disturbance tendency with high score of Pa and Sc scales of MMPI. On the other hand, the right hemisphere damaged group revealed recovery tendency of intelligence and light emotional disturbance tendency.
3. Significant information had been gathered in variable analysis of lesion lateralization and acute-chronic variables. Main effects of lesion lateralization variable revealed significant scores in Comprehension, Digit Span, Vocabulary, VIQ of
KWIS,
and Pa of MMPI. As these results bacame evidence of verbal dysfunction and thought disturbance in left hemisphere damaged group Main effects of acute and chronic variables revealed significant scores in MMPI profiles such as K, D, and Si.
Interaction effects between lesion lateralization and acute-chronic veriables revealed significant scores in MMPI profiles such as L, Hs, and Mf.
The above results are consistent with the hypothesis of cerebral dominance : verbal dysfunction and schizophrenia-like thought disturbance tendency in the chronic variable than in the acute variable. These results suggest that when cerebral
demaged
groups are studied on time dimension, acute and chronic variables, the qualitative and quantitative changes of psychopathologic phemonena will be effectively understood.
